Blog: Updated Storyboard
Welcome back to my blog everyone! Today I will be sharing our new and updated storyboard!
Story board:
Changes :
The first major change that we decided to make was to get rid of a large section of our outdoor pool scene. Originally we had a whole sequence including the character Maddi going out to the pool. This first included a scene of Maddi taking off her bathing suit cover up, and it falling. Then Maddi was going to jump into the pool and start swimming. We were also going to have an overhead shot of Madd doing laps across the pool. Firstly, we decided to not do the jumping in pool scene because we felt it was too much, and once we began filming we saw that it was just not coming out how we had imagined it. We wanted to do the overhead shot of laps in the pool, but we did not have a suitable drone to record.
Our second major change was in the title sequence. We decided to add some different scenes including a scene of candles being lit over cards, a letter burning, and a spider. We had to add these because of the failure of our "sorry" scene. The flaws of this attempted scene were stated in a previous blog. We decided on the candles over cards and the burning letter scenes because we thought that they were cool changes that would add to the realism and overall vibe of our film opening. During filming, we moved a wooden decoration, and happed to find spider. It looked so cool under the candle lighting, and so we decided to just go for it!

Blog : Lighting
Welcome back to my blog! Today I will be talking about lighting in our film opening process!
Lighting
Our film opening takes place in the nighttime, so the whole opening is low key lighting. We mainly only had one or two lights to light each scene. We did not do any 3 point lighting due to the fact that we wanted to keep it dark and eerie. We also did this due to the fact that our film is a horror/thriller, which typically has dark lighting. While this made our shots come out good, it was very very very difficult to get this lighting right. It was either to bright, to dark, or just way to noticeable that it was artificial lighting.
Bigger budget?
Since we already borrowed equipment from BEACON TV, we had good light sources. We had a really nice light that had special effects, and had a "candle" effect to flicker. We used this effect a lot to set the film vibe. This light also had settings for saturation and intensity, which we fully took advantage of. If we had a bigger budget we probably would have done some things a little differently. We probably would have gotten a bigger light, preferably with a taller stand so that we wouldn't have to hold it up.
Blog : Editing
Welcome back to my blog everyone! Today I will be talking about our editing so far, how we will be editing, and our plans for the future.
Software :
We will be using Premier Pro software to complete the editing of our project. Thankfully, Sofia and I have taken the Videography course at our school, so we know how to use and have access to this advanced software. We are also planning to teach Aleena and Amaya the basics of using it so they can also help out with some of the simple cuts and transitions throughout the editing process.
Transitions :
The majority of our transitions will be hard cuts, as we want it to look "documentary" and "scary thriller" like, with a dramatic feel. We will also have a little montage of the friends playing the game, with some jump cuts included as well.
Effects:
For effects we will be increasing exposure, (to make them brighter).
This is what we ran into problems with the most - the low quality and consistency. Since we were having a lot of trouble with the dark lighting, we wanted to fix this is the editing portion. This has so far proven difficult to achieve. The lighting in some clips looks very grainy and inconsistent with the others, causing it to look like it was made very low quality. To fix this we just put the settings the same, so that the lighting and entire film does not look choppy.
A second problem was audio and video. Since we used a separate audio system, and also filmed some audios at different times than the videos, syncing up these two aspects has proven difficult.
Blog : Title sequence
Welcome back to my blog everyone! Today I will be discussing the aspects, process, and some shots of our title sequence!
For our title sequence we will have multiple aesthetic shots that relate to the movie. For example, we have playing cards layed out into the letters "MAFIA". We pan over the letters slowly as there is lowkey lighting behind. We had different options for this shot that we tried out that I will show later in this blog! We also decided on a shot of fun polaroid's where the camera slowly pans over them, from an overhead angle. We also have a shot of a burning creepy letter, and we were originally planning to do a "sorry" written in blood. - This was a straight up fail. First we tried ketchup, but it looked way too fake, then we tried to add strawberry jam which did help a little. Once e finished writing it on plastic wrap with out ingredients, we tried to pick it up and hold it up to the wall....It was a good idea, but the plastic wrap was extremely noticeable on camera and before we could find a way to make it look better, the letters started literally dripping off. Instead we decided to do a candle lighting shot over a bunch of cards, instead to replace it. We also have a shot of a spider walking, but we have not yet decided if we will include it, as we have enough scenes already.
The MAFIA card clip was very easy to set up as we just had to lay out cards in the shape of each letter. The messed-up vibe of the cards was intentional and I think worked in conveying and adding to the eerie film. We had five different options for the MAFIA card clip:
1.)
All of the cards flipped to the red side, and only the Joker card flipped over in the first "A". This would show that the Amaya got the Joker card and controlled the game. We decided not to for to min reasons - Amaya is her actual name, while her character name is Maya, and because it would give away the killer.
2.)
All of the cards flipped to the red side and the Joker card in the "A" and the king card in the other "A" flipped over. We decided not to because once again, we felt it gave off too many details and spoiled it.
3.)
All of the main 4 cards ( queen, joker, king, Ace) flipped over while the rest are red. We thought this would be good because it shows the main characters cards, and the cards that control the game the most. After some though though, we realized that this would simply just lo
ok like too much and take the audiences attention away from the main person big killed.
4.)
This option had all of the cards laying showing the red side. We felt this was just too simple.
5.)
This is the option that we picked. It has all of the cards flipped showing the red side except the king card. The king card is in the last "A" to show it last in the pan. We decided on this one because in our title sequence we will have the light flickers then how a zoomed in version of this card with a red X (Because Madison who gets the king card dies). We felt that this was a really cool idea, nd just enough of a clue for the audience to tie everything in.
We have not fully decided on what fonts we want to put for the credits which will be shown in the title sequence. We know that we want it to be scry looking, and for them to fade in and out. We also know that they will be white, to contrast from the dark and low key lighting of most of our shots.
The rest of the shots were pretty straight forward. For the burning letter one, we first had to write a creepy letter, then dip it is coffee to make it look old and yellow. Then we burned thee edges, the name, and corners. Then w set up blank corner and layed down towels to catch the ashes. Then we set up the camera as I held the paper by the bottom edge and set it on fire.
