Blog : Day 1 of Shooting

Blog : Day 1 of Shooting

Welcome everyone! Today I will be talking our first day of filming and our plans for the rest.

Day 1 - January 17, 2025

Our first day of filming was on Friday night. After school Amaya went to go pick up the equipment from BECON Short Cuts TV and then we all met up at my house to begin. Since it was late, this day we spent figuring out the equipment, testing some camera angles, and lighting techniques. We did get a few outdoor shots but because of the weather and some slight changes we decided to make in our storyboard, only one of those shots will actually be used. We spent a lot of time trying to get the perfect shot, the perfect lighting, and the perfect sound. The scene that we did finish on day one was the scene of Madison (Me) opening the porch door and going outside to the pool holding her towel. We found that it is VERY difficult to film in the dark because the lighting is so crucial, but is so hard to figure out. We wanted the lighting to look natural, but still not too dark, but also not too obvious that we were using fake lighting. This proved very difficult and took most of the time. The sound was another thing that was very hard to control. The boom/shotgun microphone picks up EVERY little sound. This made it difficult for us to get one perfect shot with sound. Once we figured this out though, we were able to complete the shot to our liking. We also got a shot of the bubblers in the pool which we will be using.

Day 2 - January 18, 2025

Everyone came over once again the night after (Saturday) to continue our film. The extras also came, so there was a total of 7 people there.  Everyone was in there assigned pajamas and accessories and ready to go! We started by setting the scene. While Amaya and Sofia set up the camera and lighting, Aleena prepared for her first scene (Lighting the candles), and the extras and I set up the scene by placing down blankets and pillows. This was to give the overall vibe of a friend sleepover. This shot was a rack focus: first the camera would focus on the candles in pitch darkness, and show Aleena lighting them. Then the camera would shift focus to the people in the background who can now be seen with the light. This shot took MANY try's because we did not expect the rack focus to be so difficult to achieve. The lighting was also an issue we had to fix many times before getting it right. Another shot that we were able to achieve was the overhead shot of Amaya passing out the cards. This was an EXTREMELY hard shot to film. We had to get someone on a ladder and hold the camera as far as possible over so that that camera could get as close to 90 degrees as possible. As this sounds, it was very difficult. In addition to the overhead angle of this shot, the camera also had to move down at the same time. Thankfully though, we did end up getting the shot. Another shot that we completed was the circle arc shot around everyone playing. Someone had to hold the camera and mic and lighting while running around the circle of teenagers while they flip over their cards to capture their reactions. Thankfully we also did get this shot. We also did some close up reaction shots, some audio captures, and more. Overall, this was a successful day but since we did have some problems with the lighting, sound, and specific camera movements, it did take a little longer than expected.

Day 3 - January 20, 2025

We are planning to film next on this Monday since we do not have school. I hope we can finish our whole film opening on that day being that we only have the equipment for one week and none of us have any other days we can all come. Sadly, some extras can not come on Monday, but we will get every other scene done, including the title sequence shots with the cards, the polaroid shots, the pool scene, and some of the game scenes. Since we know that this is the last confirmed date that we can all film this week, we will also try to find a way to film the rest of the game scenes without some of the extras.
