"A QUIET PLACE : DAY ONE " is a horror thriller about aliens who come from the sky in New York, invade, and kill the people there. They can not see, but have super sensitive hearing, forcing all of the characters to stay quiet in fear of the monsters going after them.
I included the pictures of New York city and the subway entrance because the movie is set in New York. At the beginning of the movie they are at a puppet show right before the invasion, which is why I also added a puppet show photo. The doc photo is the actual location where the climax scene was filmed, and the abandoned house symbolizes the multiple places they had to hide out in throughout the movie.
The cardigan is the main characters costume, and the cat is her pet which is in almost every scene.
I included the cities in destruction to represent how damaged the city was throughout the movie, due to the monsters. The falling planes and alien invasion photos represent the sci-fi nature of the film and the plot.
The "shush" photo represents the scarcity of dialogue in the movie because they have to stay quiet to survive. In the movie the main character talks about needing to get pizza, because she knows she will die anyways. Then you later find out that her and her dad used to go to that pizza place, because she picks up a broken picture frame. This is why I included the broken frame and pizza photos.
The red color photo and the flashlight in darkness photos both represent the eerie mood of the film. They also represent the fear that is meant to be evoked from the film. It also gives a sinister, horror vibe when you look at the collage, which helps better capture the movie.
I completed this Sound Story project with my classmate Christy. Our sound story is comprised of two main scenes; a man breaking in to search for a woman, and the man taping her up and driving away. Throughout almost the entire audio there is an eerie background sound effect, that I turned up or down depending on the part in the story and level of suspense I wanted to add. The sound story begins with footsteps (of the man walking up to the door of the woman's house), and is followed with intense sounds of knocking and aggressively opening the locked door. The door is then finally opened and accompanied with an eerie door creek, and the sound of the man walking in slowly. These two main sounds (along with the constant background music) is layered with a knife scraping sound, heartbeat, and heavy breathing sound (from the hiding girl). Then the music hits a peak, the man finds her, and opens the closet in where she is hiding. She screams and all sound is silenced. Then taping, cutting, and rustling sounds are played to express that she is being kidnapped. He walks out and throws her into a car before driving away into the distance.
To create this sound story I started by creating a rough script. Then I went on Youtube and searched through sound effects until found the ones that I liked. My partner and I also created the foley sounds. Then I uploaded them all into the CapCut software where I layered and played with the sounds until I was satisfied with how it sounded.
Through making this sound story I learned just how much sound has an impact on a story. I never realized how much can be conveyed without any pictures or visual components. As I was layering the sounds I also realized how important the eerie background music really was. Without the background music it felt more bland, and did not strikingly impact the emotions of the listener. The heightening and lowering of the volume also added suspense when the story called for it. Sound truly makes a big difference in not only how the story is conveyed, but how the listener feels.
Although I do not edit often, I am taking a videography class where we use online software to layer and add sound to videos. For me, I felt that this sound project was more time consuming than difficult and I had to play with this particular software.
